Albany's Ride to Bremer Bay
15th October 2009 Written by Andy Photos by Rob
Last weekend had a group of us hit the road again for Bremer Bay. Though we had been there only recently, this time it was to keep the ladies happy. (No, we took our own.) It was about wining and dinning them and putting them up in a nice motel for the evening. You could say it was a soft run.
The morning was sunny and later turned quite hot as we pulled away from the start point and headed east. The bikes seemed to like the clear dry weather for a change and the riders had the heat to complain about instead of the wet and cold. The first stop we made was at the newly reopened Boxwood Hills Roadhouse. On arrival the sight of approx 20 motorbikes and riders of a Christian MC from all around Australia having been to a rally in Perth greeted us. The new owners of the roadhouse are very friendly people from Albany and not afraid of some friendly fun with motorcyclists, drop in if you should ever be going past. Home made pies pasties and sausage rolls.
We arrived at Bremer around lunchtime and went to the Nursing Clinic where Dragon Lady was putting in time as part of her becoming a Nurse Practitioner? She had prepared for us a lunch of chicken and salad that was consumed with gusto before we booked into the motel attached to the tavern.
After a beer or three we mounted up for a tour of the bay and surrounding beaches and points of interest after which most of us retired for a nanny nap in our rooms before getting ready for diner. The dinning room was very busy that night, no spare seats were available so we were glad we had booked ahead. The service was great and the food excellent.
As the morning dawned on the Inlet and ocean and Rob’s wife Beth launched her canoe and paddled up the inlet. Then the wind came up and she had a hard paddle back down the river to shore. No wonder she was hanging out for breakfast! Breakfast of bacon eggs and pancakes with maple syrup bbq’d on the shores of the inlet went down a treat.
After our goodbyes to Dragon Lady we headed home with a blustering strong wind in our faces and then from the side making it a tiring ride home. There was the obligatory beer at the King River tavern near Albany before we all made our own ways home to get the bugs out of our teeth and off the bikes before they set. A great weekend.
The next fixture is the Classic and Vintage weekend and hill climb in Albany on the weekend of the 31st Oct – 1st Nov. Hopefully most of us will attend the bike show on Stirling Tce. On the Saturday morning to view the bikes and take part in the rally. The rally is $10 a head going to a charity and has a long and a short course, this starts at 1pm Sunday the 1st will be the hill climb, a reliability trial for bikes made prior to 1980. We have offered our assistance at the starting line so a few of us will be required for the day. Andy has been the official starter for several years and is at it again. All monies raised goes to a local charity so we are happy to help the Classic and Vintage MC.
Our next meeting will be at Tenterden some 75kms from Albany on Saturday 21st Nov. It is also Hutch’s Nom ride. The following is the format though the exact route is TBA.
- Leave Albany on the Nom ride to be in Cranbrook for lunch with a stop for refreshments on the way.
- Lunch at the Cranbrook Pub
- After lunch and a relaxing hour or two, we ride down to Tenterden, about five clicks away
- Arrive at Hutch and Anne’s L.U.P. for the meeting.
- Meeting concluded, some social intercourse and a few refreshing ales (BYO) before a meal prepared by Hutch ( with guidance from Anne!).
- This is a sleep over with some sleeping space in the shed so bring your swag and or tent. Further details TBA.
That’s whats been happening in Albany, we hope everyone is well and safe riding.
