Mick's Nom Ride

by Mick      31st May 2009

A few months ago when I became a Nom I realised that I would be doing my Nom ride in late autumn to early winter, ever since then I have had everything I could cross crossed for fine weather and I wasn’t disappointed. Sunday brought blue skies and warm weather, perfect riding conditions. Julie and I were joined by Bronco, Spider, Wolf, Phoenix, Pornno, Surly, Tom, Kaz, Gonzo, Furbag, Steveo and Bronco’s guests Ganz and Jan.

Leading a ride was definitely a learning experience for me, with the first lesson coming early on in the day. I was merrily riding along in my own little world about to cruise through an amber light on Mandurah Rd, when I remembered the 12 other bikes following me, a slightly over enthusiastic application of brakes later and when the smoke cleared I found myself in the middle of the intersection with Bronco letting me know that I had just racked up my first (of many) fines for the day.

After running into road closures due to the freeway extension, we had to change routes on the fly ending up in North Dandalup for an impromptu first rest stop. Two dropped helmets later and we were on the road again, heading down the South West Highway to Waroona.

The road from Waroona through to Dwellingup as usual did not disappoint, one of my favourite roads in WA, there’s really nothing quite like riding along a tree lined road on a sunny day.

Arriving in Dwellingup we stopped for lunch at the recently reopened Millhouse Café, the food and coffee were very good and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a nice rest stop. After lunch we headed down the Pinjarra Williams Rd towards to Quindanning, the pub and the end of my ride. Pulling into Quindanning it was good to get to the pub and wash away the dust from the narrow road. After a drink and a chat it was time say our goodbyes and head for home. I would like to thank everyone that came along and supported me on the ride.
I hope that everyone enjoyed themselves, I know that Julie and I certainly did.
